BRIXTON MVPS

Every basketball community has its heroes. The ones who are raising the game for those around them. Serving people and investing their time in bringing others along with them, both on and off the court.

These are our MVPs.

Starting in Brixton, our MVPs series shines a light on those who are raising the game for their community.

Sevian Witter epitomises that. Having started playing at 11 with London Towers before the team shut down, she then made the jump to London Thunder with her brothers, playing with the boys.

Ultimately, she landed at Brixton Topcats to play with their all-girls team, coached by Moji Odusanya and the legendary Jimmy Rogers.

“It was special to be a part of the basketball family,” she recalled. “Basketball became a part of my lifestyle and routine. Playing in tournaments and camps every summer, up late at night watching the playoffs. I just absolutely love the game…”

It was an injury, rupturing her Achilles while playing basketball, that allowed Sevian to reframe her view on the world. “I went through a lot, mentally it was very draining and challenging, but it also taught me how to overcome that as well.”

Now an aspiring artist, lessons learned through the game, especially after rupturing her achilles, transfer into her artwork.

Sevian has been a key figure in our Raise the Game campaign, having been involved in the launch and designing custom jerseys for the regeneration of the Clapham Common court.

Now, she has produced two exclusive t-shirt designs for Foot Locker which take inspiration from her injury and the notion that Pressure Creates Diamonds. The hero colourway is an ode to the Kobe 8 sneaker she was wearing when she got injured and the technique used to achieve the colour scheme was heavily influenced by fellow artist and friend, Lory Louves.

“I don’t see myself as an MVP,'' she said humbly. “I’m grateful, but the mentality is the most valuable and that’s what means the most to me.

“Being able to create a piece that tells the story of the ups and downs of my journey through this injury, but also capturing the influences that have shaped my mentality, has been really special.

“This is for everyone going through pressures themselves, but especially to those closest to me. It’s just a reminder that the process is creating a diamond. Keep shining!”

Sevian’s signature apparel collection was sold exclusively in our Foot Locker Brixton store with proceeds being split between her two childhood clubs – The Brixton Topcats and London Thunder.
